Marine AIS Transponders
Automatic Identification Systems or AIS is an automated tracking system for marine vessels. AIS data is transmitted over two dedicated digital VHF channels.
AIS Transponders, sometimes referred to as Transceivers are capable of both sending and receiving AIS data.
Transponders installed on vessels will transmit data about the ships position, course, speed, vessel type and dimensional data.
This data can be very useful for navigation, especially in busy shipping areas. The AIS data can be overlaid on a compatible chart plotter when connected to an AIS transponder via NMEA.
Most commercial ships are mandated to carry AIS transponders, and each year more sailing yachts and powerboats are fitting AIS equipment.
