What are the difference fleece weights? Fleece weights are measured in gsm, or, grams per square metre - not a typically common unit of measurement, introduced by Polartec® as a way to differentiate between the different types of fleece. There are typically 3 levels of fleece weight
- 100gsm / Lightweight: Lightweight fleeces are good for high output activities, tending to be more breathable and acting well as a mid-layer beneath another fleece or jacket on a moderately cold day.
- 200gsm / Midweight: A midweight fleece is more versatile, able to act as an outer layer in its own right in cold temperatures. They are also a great midlayer option for colder days. Like a lightweight fleece they are breathable, but benefit from extra insulation.
- 300gsm / Heavyweight: Heavyweight fleeces are the least versatile of the fleece weights. Not particularly breathable and bulkier than the other lighter options, they work well as a standalone layer or outer jacket.
